Physiotherapy Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain affects millions of people every year. Whether neck pain is acute or chronic, statistics show that approximately 80% of adults are affected by some neck pain condition. This may not be enough to restrict their daily activities but just make them uncomfortable and irritated.

The knowledge, experience and ongoing commitment of our caring physiotherapists are the foundations for your thorough assessment, individual treatment programs and successful outcomes based on the "why and what " is causing your pain.

Your neck

The neck serves as a flexible connection between your head and the rest of your body. The vertebrae are separated from each other by discs, stabilised by joints and ligaments and moved by muscles. But as the neck is not as protected as the rest of the spine, it means this slim structure is prone to damage and distress that can compromise motion and lead to pain.

The causes of neck pain are vast but can be divided into two categories.

Injury and trauma

Examples of theses are sporting injuries and vehicle accidents. These can result in spasm and pain in the muscles, structural problems with the vertebrae, discs, and nerves and can be experienced as neck and arm pain, headaches and tingling.

Poor posture and imbalances

This second and most common cause of neck pain is poor posture and muscular imbalance causing muscle and ligament strain, degeneration of joints and subsequent pain.

The correct assessment and diagnosis of the causes and contributing factors are vital in reducing and helping you manage your pain. Our physiotherapy treatment for your neck is individual and is related to the condition being acute or long standing.

The Physiotherapists at Hindmarsh and Fitzroy Physiotherapy Clinics will identify the reasons for your neck pain and provide effective treatment as well as prevention of further episodes. Self management strategies, advice, education and local manual therapy techniques combined with evidence based specific exercises will help get your neck back in motion.

What we do

  • Research has shown physiotherapy to be effective for neck pain and often the best results are achieved by a combination of therapies. Our Physiotherapists will combine a number of the following treatments as indicated by your presentation.
  • Spinal joint mobilizations to restore proper movement of the vertebrae
  • Soft tissue massage and stretching to help tightness and muscle spasm
  • Exercises and movements that relieve the pain and address muscle imbalances
  • Electrotherapy such as ultrasound, interferential, TENS or heat
  • Dry Needle Acupuncture
  • Education about how your pain is created, what to do to ease your pain at home, sport and work, with an emphasis on prevention of further recurrences. Our physiotherapists can also assess your workstation or work area and make recommendations for appropriate equipment or modifications.
  • Pilates and or exercises to improve core stability particularly in the shoulder blade area
  • Postural advice and body awareness in order to avoid further strain and aggravations
  • Recommending suitable supports, pillows or aids to improve your posture and help relieve you pain.

Neck pain can be prolonged if contributing factors are not addressed. Don’t let your inertia prevent you from taking action and get your neck pain under control.
