Your neck

The neck serves as a flexible connection between your head and the rest of your body. The vertebrae are separated from each other by discs, stabilised by joints and ligaments and moved by muscles. But as the neck is not as protected as the rest of the spine, it means this slim structure is prone to damage and distress that can compromise motion and lead to pain.

The causes of neck pain are vast but can be divided into two main categories.

Injury and trauma

Examples of theses are sporting injuries and vehicle accidents. These can result in spasm and pain in the muscles, structural problems with the vertebrae, discs, and nerves and can be experienced as neck and arm pain, headaches and tingling.

Poor posture and imbalances

This second and most common cause of neck pain is poor posture and muscular imbalance causing muscle and ligament strain, degeneration of joints and subsequent pain.

The correct assessment and diagnosis of the causes and contributing factors are vital in reducing and helping you manage your pain. Our physiotherapy treatment for your neck is individual and is related to the condition being acute or long standing.

The Physiotherapists at Hindmarsh and Fitzroy Physiotherapy Clinics will identify the reasons for your neck pain and provide effective treatment as well as prevention of further episodes. Self management strategies, advice, education and local manual therapy techniques combined with evidence based specific exercises will help get your neck back in motion.

Could it be a wry neck?

A wry neck is a common condition characterized by onset of pain and stiffness in the neck. Patients with a wry neck typically experience severe one sided sharp neck pain which is often accompanied by spasm of the surrounding neck muscles.
