Hydrotherapy

What is Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, often referred to as aquatic physiotherapy, is exercise therapy in warm water that can be used as a form of rehabilitation to aid joint range of motion, strengthen muscles, and ease aches and pains, either acute or chronic. It is excellent for the treatment of post operative orthopaedic surgery, back pain, arthritis and even sporting injuries.

The warmth of the water promotes muscle relaxation and pain relief and the buoyancy can be used to assist or resist joint movements as well as reducing the compressive forces of gravity. This makes it an ideal exercise environment for a number of conditions. It can incorporate general fitness, joint mobilization, trunk stabilization, balance, coordination and strengthening. It’s a great way to get back in motion.

Not a swimmer?

You do not need to be able to swim for hydrotherapy. The pool is generally quite shallow and if you are still nervous our Physio will be in the water with you, one on one. Additionally you can use floatation devices for further reassurance.

Do I need classes ?

Following a clinical assessment in our Physio clinics, our Physiotherapists conduct individual hydrotherapy sessions to help get our patients confident and relaxed in the water. We understand that class timetables do not suit busy people with individual problems. We support you all the way with your rehabilitation and when ready help you attend your local convenient pool to continue with your tailored designed programme.

This is ideal for the independent and motivated person who does not wish to be tied down to schedules and classes but is safe and capable of continuing their exercise in their own time. Updates and reviews are organized to ensure progress is maintained and developed or further sessions with our Physios can be continued if preferred.

Some of the aims of hydrotherapy are:

  • Management of muscle and joint pain
  • Movement and postural re-training
  • Relief of tension and fatigue
  • Injury rehabilitation and safe return to exercise
  • Specific rehabilitation for surgery, trauma, sports and dance injuries
  • Conditioning, cross-training and technique modification for sports and dance
  • Osteoporosis and arthritis management
  • Ante and post natal fitness

Our most popular programmes are developed for our hip and knee replacement post operative rehabilitation. Many people manage their post- op rehab with ease, however there are a number of people who may struggle with regaining their movement and strength or just need a little help to get on their way.

Hydrotherapy is a fantastic medium to build your strength and increase your mobility in both the early and later stages. It is a safe and easy programme designed for your condition ensuring that you progress through your rehabilitation as planned.
